Environment and circular economy
The latest studies show that the textile industry accounts for between 3-7% of global CO2 emissions. Our goal is to work towards becoming climate neutral. We have a main focus on CO2 and water consumption, in addition to ensuring that only organically grown bamboo from FSC approved bamboo plantations is used. A concrete example we are working on is to dye the yarn before weaving rather than after weaving the underwear - this alone will reduce the water consumption in the dyeing process by up to 60% and significantly less energy will be used in this process.
The packaging we use for all our products is produced from recycled paper and cardboard - completely free of all forms of plastic. Paper fibers can be recycled 6-8 times before the fibers become worn. For every tonne of paper/cardboard that is recycled, 14 trees are saved.
Fast fashion is driven by fashion and a survey shows that one wears a garment on average only 8 times. This is of great importance for why we choose to only create classic garments that come in black and white - completely free of patterns and emblems/prints. We want our customers to "use up" our products before they are thrown away and recycled in order to save the environment - we see this as effective environmental measures.
The EU has received a new waste directive for the transition to a circular economy. The regulations require the member states to introduce source sorting for textiles by 2025. This is good news because there will be more and more manufacturers who will use recycled textiles as raw material for the production of new textiles, while at the same time source sorting for textiles will become more accessible.
It is of great importance to us which raw materials are used for our production. Deforestation is a major problem in the textile industry, where the raw material is cellulose from forests. This was a conscious choice for Bambusa in the early days as using organically grown bamboo completely free of fertilizers and pesticides from FSC approved bamboo plantations seems to be the very best raw material for our products rather than using raw materials such as cotton or cellulose from forestry. The fact that bamboo converts CO2 into oxygen up to 35% more efficiently during growth than other plants with the same volume is also a big plus. There is also no need to use artificial irrigation on the bamboo plantations.
When the bamboo is harvested, it is cut into smaller tiles that are made into viscose through a process that uses chemicals such as caustic soda and carbon disulfide. Here it is absolutely essential that the process takes place in a closed circuit, which means that there are no exhaust gases of any kind that are harmful to nature and people are released during production. All viscose for our production of socks and underwear is produced in a patented closed circuit where the chemicals used are also reused and waste water is purified.
